2.5 Gen or 3rd Gen?

@Marriot
It’s easy to add a transmission cooler. I chose a 2020 because of the newer tech, less wear and tear, and likely fewer drivetrain issues (marginal since the 2nd gen is already amazing). I think it looks better too (IMO), and the paint should last longer due to age. I paid about $700 for the transmission cooler, but that included all OEM parts except for the Setrab cooler, which is a really nice one. This can be done for under $300 if you don’t mind the appearance.

I’m going to do this; I’m really hard on my truck. Thank you.

Up until 2018, they had external coolers with the towing package. So there is OEM thermostat and lines available. It’s better than what you described on the 2nd gen where the transmission is cooled by the radiator. You risk getting a milkshake with that setup. It’s not very common, but as those trucks age, it would be wise to swap out the radiator.

@WilliamMia
Not on the radiator; it uses its own cooler (radiator). The 2.5 is set up like my Camry. I will post pictures later. It uses coolant to cool the trans fluid.

Oh, you’re probably right; I might be confusing the 2nd gen with the first gen. I remember reading about the issue years ago. The transmission was cooled by coolant, and as they aged, some reported problems. To be honest, I haven’t looked into prior models too much because I have a 2020. All I know is that previous gens with the towing package came with external transmission coolers and that setup was removed in 2019. So, adding one to my 2020 is possible using the same part numbers.

@WilliamMia
I’m discussing the differences between 2007-2013 (2nd Gen) and 2013-2019 (2.5 gen with some kind of transmission cooling). The 2nd Gens have a real trans cooler. The 2.5 has the same kind of trans cooling as my Camry.

@Marriot
So it looks like we’re both kind of wrong. The 2nd and 2.5 gen models share the same cooler from 2010-2018. From 2007-2010 it was a standalone cooler. From 2010-2018 with the towing package, it was built into the AC condenser (the condenser cooler is actually two coolers in one). Still externally cooling the transmission and effective at it. Some complaints have been made about the AC in the truck.
