2002 toyota tundra, code P 1780

Hey all, my 2002 Toyota Tundra just threw a P1780 code. It’s a 2WD with the standard engine. Anyone have a clue on what that could mean?

I think that code usually has to do with the transmission. Have you had any shifting issues?

Not really… it seems to drive fine. Just saw the code pop up and thought I’d check here before digging deeper.

Gotcha! Sometimes these codes can be random. If it’s not acting up, maybe just clear it and see if it comes back?

Could be worth looking at the neutral safety switch. I think that’s related to P1780 on Toyotas.

Oh, I didn’t think of that! I’ll look it up. Thanks!

No prob! Let me know if you need help finding info on testing it.

You could also check with a tech on JustAnswer. I used them before and they were super quick with answers.

What’s JustAnswer? Never heard of it.

It’s like a service where you can ask questions and real mechanics, vets, and other pros answer. Super handy if you’re stuck.

Sometimes the code might show up if there’s an electrical issue. Any chance you’ve got a loose connection somewhere?

Not sure, but I’ll double-check. Thanks for the tip!

P1780 sounds like something related to the transmission range sensor, if I remember right. Could be a simple fix.

What’s a transmission range sensor? Not familiar with that.

It’s basically a sensor that tells the car’s computer what gear you’re in. If it’s acting up, you might get a code like P1780.
