2021 Forester suddenly has a bunch of problems… what now?

This happened yesterday morning… started the car like usual and suddenly a bunch of warning lights showed up on the dashboard (check the pics). Opened the Subaru app, and it listed three issues (also in the pics). Took it to the nearest dealership, and they quoted me somewhere between $3k and $5k for repairs. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Am I missing something… isn’t this still under warranty?

Yeah, it should still be covered under the 3-year/36k-mile warranty.

OP, kinda hard to say anything without knowing what exactly is wrong with the car.

@Zya
Depends when they bought it. If it was late 2020, it might be out of warranty by now.

Just throwing out a dollar amount doesn’t help much. What’s actually wrong with the car? What error codes did they pull? What parts are they saying need to be replaced?

We bought it new in November 2020. It never had any issues, never hit anything, no potholes, nothing out of the ordinary. Yesterday morning, all the lights popped up on the dash, so I figured I’d just schedule the 30k-mile maintenance and have them check it. Car is three years old, only 32k miles, and the total repair bill (including maintenance, oil change, tire stuff, etc.) is $5k. They told me the big issue is the ‘brake actuator’—that’s why it’s so expensive.

@Smith
Appreciate the update. Still need more details to know what’s really going on.

As for the warranty, your 3-year/36k-mile coverage would have ended in November 2023. Since you’re just past that, Subaru might be willing to help out with some of the cost. Definitely worth reaching out to them.

@Smith
When I look up brake actuator, the electric parking brake system comes up… and that is NOT a $5k repair. Either they’re charging you for a ton of unnecessary ‘preventative’ maintenance, or that dealership is straight-up overcharging. If you can, post the estimate they gave you—it’ll help figure out if they’re ripping you off.

Didn’t the 2021 models get the updated TCV?

@Kel
Depends on the build date.

Could be the gas cap. That thing will make you think the car is about to self-destruct.

Yep, just went through this. Loose gas cap triggered the check engine light, which disabled EyeSight, which then set off EVERY warning light in the car. Looked like a Christmas tree.

Tightened the gas cap and disconnected the battery to reset. Fixed everything.

$3k-$5k for repairs is crazy. That’s the kind of number you’d expect for engine or transmission issues, not whatever this is.

If you haven’t already, take it to a good independent shop that works on Subarus. Get another opinion before paying that bill.

Shouldn’t this still be under warranty? And what exactly is wrong with it that makes the repair almost $5k?

Call Subaru of America. They help with out-of-warranty issues pretty often, especially if it involves EyeSight.

Had my steering rack go bad on my 2017 WRX at 55k miles, and Subaru covered the $7500 repair.

Honestly, get the battery tested. A weak or dying battery can cause all sorts of weird issues like this.

This happened to me right before my battery died.

Gas cap?

I had something similar happen. First, random warning lights started popping up, then the dash started flickering, and eventually, it wouldn’t start at all. Turned out the battery was completely dead.

Hopefully, it’s something simple for you. If your warranty is already expired, I’d definitely get another opinion before paying for a big repair.
