2024 Tacoma feels unstable on asphalt lips

I’ve had my 2024 Tacoma for a few months now and noticed it feels super sensitive when driving over asphalt lips. It sort of does a shimmy, especially on turns. Last week, I was going around a sweeping turn at about 55 mph, hit a lip, and it felt so unstable I thought something was seriously wrong. It actually shook me up a bit.

On normal roads, the truck feels fine, but this issue keeps coming up when I hit these lips. The suspension feels too soft, almost spongy. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Could it be the lane assist? Mine sometimes twitches when it thinks I’m drifting out of a lane, even when I’m not.

That’s what I was thinking too. Mine has misread parallel lines on the road as lanes and made the truck wiggle when I drove over them.

Good point, lane assist might be causing it. My nephew told me he had lane assist pull him toward an exit ramp once when he wasn’t even trying to take it. Pretty scary at 70 mph.

Yeah, lane assist can be weird sometimes. It’s tried to pull me back when it thought I was going off-road. Scary when it happens out of nowhere, but I still keep it on because it’s actually saved me a few times.

That shimmy is probably haptic feedback. It’s designed to warn you when you’re drifting out of the lane. You can turn it off if you find it too annoying, but it’s there to help you stay on track.

What trim level and tire size are you running?

It’s an SR5 with 17-inch tires.

No passengers and nothing in the truck bed, if that matters.

@vinic
Is it a double cab?

The suspension setup differs between double cabs and extra cabs, so it might just be how your truck is built. I’ve got a Tacoma too, and it pulls a bit when the road is uneven or poorly marked (Michigan roads are awful). The suspension is softer, and the truck is pretty light, so you feel everything. If it’s all stock, this might just be normal. Try staying away from deep grooves and shoulders, especially in the middle of the highway. If you’ve got larger tires or any aftermarket suspension changes, an alignment check might be worth it. If you think it’s still not right, have the dealer inspect it for peace of mind. Hope that helps!

You might want to read the earlier comments about lane assist—it sounds like that’s the issue here.

First thing I do with any new car is turn off all the driving assist features. Try disabling it and see if the problem goes away.

Mine activates the auto-steering when I’m going down a steep hill with curves. It’s annoying, but I’m getting used to it.

Sounds like the lane assist. My wife’s 2024 Highlander has it, and the car literally moves itself back into the lane if you get close to the edge.
