Anyone actually tried X mode? How’s it working for you?

@Penn
You’re explaining what it’s for, but not really how it works. For anyone reading, X mode helps with snow and slippery conditions by adjusting power and wheel slip at low speeds. It’s not just for trails, but yeah, not great if you’re going fast.

@mary
X mode cuts out above 25 mph but will turn back on when you slow down. It’s for getting through tough spots like deep snow or mud. Stability control works better at higher speeds, which is why it shuts off.

@mary
The manual explains all this. If you’re getting downvoted, it might be because your tone comes off as overly critical.

Tried it the other day in heavy snow. It kept beeping and turning off when I hit around 22 mph. Is that normal?

Trail driving is all about going slow to reduce strain on the vehicle and passengers. X mode supports that. At higher speeds, it can’t process data quickly enough to help, so it shuts off.

When it gets really slick, I turn off traction control. Works better for deep snow or icy trails.

@Holland
I don’t have a sport mode, just normal, snow/dirt, and deep snow/mud. I’ll re-read the manual when I get a chance.

Got it. Try turning off traction control in an empty snowy lot and test how it handles. It can make a big difference in tough conditions.

Subaru’s traction control can be a pain. It overreacts and won’t let you apply throttle when all wheels slip, which can cause issues like sliding backward on hills.

In winter, I often turn it off. X mode is useful depending on the situation, especially on forest service roads. Hill descent takes getting used to, though. I also have studded snow tires, so it’s not a tire issue.
