I got a 2022 Highlander with 13K miles in August 2022. Recently, I’ve been having a problem with the rear hatch. Sometimes, when I try to open it using my remote or the button above the license plate, it opens a few inches and then starts beeping. It eventually opens after a few tries, but when I go to close it, the same thing happens. It doesn’t always happen, but it’s becoming more frequent, especially on the first try of the day. Is anyone else having this issue or has anyone dealt with this before?

Dealers often say they can’t replicate the problem. Try recording a video of the hatch opening after it sits overnight, showing it on the first try. This might help show the issue clearly to the service advisor.

How long have you had the problem? I’m in the same situation, and I’m worried the hatch might completely fail before my warranty runs out. I’m going to try recording a video so I can show the dealer the issue.

I had the same issue with my 2022 Highlander. The dealership replaced both strut motors under warranty. I made sure not to open the hatch at all before going in, and the dealership was able to replicate the problem and fix it right away.
I’m having the same issue with my 2021. It’s gotten worse in the cold, and now I’m a few months and a couple thousand miles past warranty. I’ve had the dealer look at it a few times when the warranty was still good, but I don’t have much hope now. This seems like it might be something they should recall, but I know that’s probably wishful thinking.
I have a 2019 and am having the same issue. Does anyone know if there are any aftermarket power hatch strut motors that open and close the tailgate faster than the stock ones?
I’ve had the same problem since I got mine. I really don’t like this vehicle.
