Anyone else having oil burning issues with a 2016 Camry 2.5L?

Has anyone here had problems with oil burning in a 2016 Camry 4-cylinder? I’ve seen the Car Care Nut videos about the 2AR-FE engine and know this can happen. It sounded like it mostly affected earlier years, but lately he’s been saying 2015–2017 Camrys with the 2.5L might have the same issue. He doesn’t recommend them now unless there’s proof of regular 5,000-mile oil changes instead of the 10,000-mile ones.

My sister-in-law is thinking about buying a 2016 Camry 2.5L with this engine. It’s got 128k miles, one owner, and is listed for $15k. Thing is, I don’t think there are service records. I’ve told her what I’m worried about, but in the end it’s their choice. They’re taking it for a pre-purchase inspection, but I doubt the mechanic will do anything like a boroscope check or compression test. What do you all think?

Yeah, I’ve seen those videos too.

Have you had oil burning issues on your car? What year is it, and how often do you change your oil?

I’m not sure if my car burns oil or not. I just change it when the maintenance light comes on.

I’m not sure what the manual says for that year, but my 2021 Camry says every 10k miles. I still change it at 5k though. I’d rather spend money on oil than deal with worn-out parts. If you wait too long, oil breaks down and messes up seals and rings, which leads to oil burning. Whatever the recommended interval is, I’d do half that just to be safe.

@Devlin
The 8th gen Camry has a completely different 4-cylinder engine though.

True, but I’d still stick with changing it more often than they say.

So back when the old advice was every 3,000 miles, you would’ve done it at 1,500?
