Has anyone else realized that they naturally favor one side of the lane when using lane centering? I noticed that I tend to hug the right side more, probably because of driving left-hand drive cars. But when the lane centering kicks in, it always feels like the car is too far to the right for me. I keep wanting to correct it even though I know the system is probably more accurate than I am.
I totally relate! I also tend to hug the right side of the lane, and it took me a while to get used to the car centering itself. I kept trying to correct it, but after getting a bunch of warning beeps, I finally gave in and trusted the system.
My car seems to think the center is closer to the line where oncoming traffic is! It’s crazy, and I’ve had other cars move over because they probably think I’m too close. It really doesn’t feel safe when that happens.
Honestly, I only use lane centering when I’m driving out west where the lanes are wider and there’s less traffic. Otherwise, yeah, I kinda hug one side of the lane to stay safe.
Staying exactly in the center of the lane isn’t always the safest move. I usually try to stay closer to the side of the road rather than being right in the middle. I’m surprised that car systems don’t allow us to adjust where the center should be based on traffic. My Subaru’s system is okay but really only helpful when the roads are empty.
@Vin
Totally agree with you! The lane assist on Subaru isn’t great. I’ve driven Audi and BMW, and their systems were much better. Subaru keeps moving like a drunk driver, always veering too close to the center line. We love our Outback, but the lane assist could definitely use an upgrade.
I drive a right-hand drive car, and I feel like it centers too far to the right. Since we drive on the left side of the road here, it gets way too close to the middle for my liking.

I’m in a left-hand drive car, and mine does the same thing! It seems to favor the side with oncoming traffic, which isn’t ideal.
@Wayne
Same here! I grew up driving bigger trucks, so I’m used to hugging the left side of the lane. Lane centering keeps pulling me too far to the right, and it just feels wrong.
One more thing I’ve noticed is that the system seems to ask me to keep my hands on the wheel way more frequently than it used to. When I first got the car, I timed it, and it would take around 15-20 seconds before the first warning. But after a firmware update, it now asks me every 5 seconds or so, even when I’m lightly touching the wheel. Anyone else feel like the system is being overly cautious now? I only trust it during heavy traffic when things are moving slow—it works great in those situations. Almost makes me wish there were more traffic jams just so I could use it more, lol.
Lol, I just got used to my car always nudging me to the left. It’s like it has a mind of its own!
Don’t just assume the system is always more accurate than you. Lane assist usually favors the right side because it’s safer to be farther from oncoming traffic. That’s why on the highway it sometimes feels like the car is almost in the next lane.
@rodneyjames
Mine does the opposite! It hugs the left side, and I hate it. Southern California drivers are all over the place, and I don’t trust them to stay in their lanes. My car got calibrated when I bought it, and the shop said it’s working fine, but it feels like I’m playing bumper cars sometimes!
