I stumbled across a Subaru Outback 3.0R listing and ngl, kinda tempted. It’s got that flat-six with 245hp and AWD, plus it’s only 2k. I know they drink fuel like crazy (like under 20mpg real world lol) and tax is brutal now at £710 a year. But still, that engine, the ride, the vibe… anyone actually run one of these as a daily? Or should I just keep dreaming?
I used to own one! The engine’s smooth af and loves to rev. Super comfy too. But yeah, the mpg is rough lol

How’s the reliability tho? I keep hearing mixed stuff.

If you keep up with servicing, they’re tanks. Stuff like timing chain tensioners and sensors can go, but no head gasket probs like the 2.5s.
The one I looked at had like 150k miles and still ran smooth. Just check for rust and those MOT advisories. They love to rot in weird spots lol

What kind of advisories are we talking?
@Laine
Stuff like worn bushings, ABS warning lights, oil leaks. Pretty normal wear but still good to know.
No manual is a bummer but I’ve heard the 5-speed auto is decent, especially with manual mode. Is that true?

Yeah for sure. No dual mass flywheel drama either, which is a win tbh. Just throw it in manual mode and enjoy the revs.
I’d love to grab one just for the sound. Flat-sixes have such a nice tone and you don’t get that in modern SUVs anymore.

Facts. Plus you’re not paying 60k like you would for a 911. Just gotta deal with 28mpg… or less
If you’re gonna get one, just make sure it hasn’t been thrashed or neglected. Some owners just ignore faults till it fails MOT.

Saw one where they failed the MOT, then retested 2 weeks later without fixing anything like why even bother?
