The bolts for my 4Runner’s skid plate are cross-threaded, probably from the previous owner or a shop they used. Has anyone fixed this with a tap and die set?
I used a M8x1.25 helicoil, and it worked well.

I learned something new today!

Same here. Every time I take the skid plate off, I clean the threads with a tap and die to keep them in good shape.
I tapped the holes and got new bolts and washers from the hardware store. Haven’t had any issues taking the skids off multiple times since.
I re-tapped the holes and switched to stainless bolts and washers. Stock bolts tend to strip too easily. If things get worse, I might try using studs and nuts instead.
I tried tapping the threads, but they stripped again after a few uses. Maybe a new bolt would help, but I agree that helicoils seem like the best option.
The best fix costs a bit, but it’s worth it. If you didn’t mention which side, try searching for this part number: 5140360020.
I’ve been meaning to fix mine with a tap kit too but keep forgetting. Thanks for the reminder!
I’ve been changing the oil on my two vehicles for years without this issue. Are you guys using power tools or something?
