I recently got a new Corolla Cross (non-hybrid, base model). I tend to coast before a stop sign or stoplight when traffic allows, but I’ve noticed something odd. When I coast at around 10-15mph, the car seems to slow down slightly, almost like it’s gently using the brakes, even though I’m not pressing them. I’m pretty sure this is normal, but I’m curious what’s actually happening. I couldn’t find anything about it in the manual.
My guess is that the engine or transmission might be slowing the car down, similar to how trucks sometimes downshift to help slow down without using their brakes. Anyone have insight into this?
This is actually a safety feature. The car does the same thing if you’re coasting behind another vehicle. If you don’t act on it, it will beep at you after a bit.
I’d be surprised if it’s that because it activates even when there’s no one in front of me, and the braking force is barely noticeable and happens at the same speed every time.
It could be part of the Proactive Driving Assist system. When certain conditions are met, it uses the car’s camera and radar to provide gentle braking and/or steering to help with things like keeping distance from other vehicles or pedestrians.
Ah, classic engine braking! It’s great for when you need to slow down a little. Your brakes will thank you for not using them too much. My pet peeve is people who keep tapping the brakes – just let off the gas!
