Best RTT for a short bed Tacoma? Need room for 2 adults and 2 big dogs

Just picked up a 2024 Tacoma with a 5’ bed and installed a Cali Raised mid-height bed rack. Now I need a solid RTT that can fit me, my partner, and our two 80lb dogs while keeping the footprint below the roofline. The biggest I’ve found so far is the OVS HD Nomadic 3, but I’m wondering if there’s a better option out there or maybe a hardshell that would work. Any suggestions?

I have a Roofnest Condor XL on my 3rd gen Tacoma. It fits well, but if you’re looking for something really tough, the Overland Aluminum might be a better choice. The plastic coating on mine is peeling a bit.

@Sal
Appreciate that! Do you also have a 5’ bed? If so, does the tent hang off the back a little? Any issues with that?

Yeah, it hangs off just a couple of inches, but it’s not a big deal at all.

@Sal
That actually doesn’t look bad. Thanks for the pic!

I’ve been looking into the Condor XL a lot. One last thing—do you run a bike rack on the hitch? Does the tent get in the way?

Nice truck! Did you ceramic coat it? Highly recommend for black trucks. I have the Rough Country hard top RTT, fits my wife and me just fine. Had to make some custom brackets for my bed rack, but it was a pretty easy fix. Sits almost flush with the back on my 5’ bed.

@Sidney
Yeah, I did! Totally worth it, especially up here in the northeast.

I have an FSR High Country V2 Mini. Love it.

I had the 4x4 Colorado Alto Mini on my 3rd gen. It overhung a couple of inches off the back but still looked fine. My wife and I plus our 75lb dog had plenty of room. It’s wider than a queen and has a little extra space at the foot. Only downside was the weight—it’s heavy—but that might not be a big deal for you.

That’s super helpful, especially with a dog in the mix. I’ve been measuring our bed at home like crazy trying to figure out what we’ll need.

Yeah, the Alto Mini was the biggest one we found that fit a short bed setup without sticking up over the roof. I also didn’t want a full-height rack. We used the Desert Armor Doggo RTT ramp for our pup, worked great after some practice!

That air dam needs to go, man.

100%! Just waiting for the snow and slush to clear so I can get under there.

Nice! The black looks sick, and the whole setup is coming together. Hope the truck treats you well.

@Ronald
Thanks! Been wanting one of these for a long time.

Took the dam off my mom’s ‘24 Sport, looked awesome… but then she heard a weird whistling sound and told me to put it back on! :man_facepalming:

@Lily
Yeah, I’ve heard that can happen. I think you can fix it by plugging the lower control arms. We’ll see.
