Bought a 2012 Rav4 with 120K miles, seeking advice

My '09 Matrix was totaled after six years and 100K miles. I wouldn’t usually go for a car with 120K miles, but it was the only option I could afford from a dealership. While I regretted the decision during the process, I’ve grown to like it. The car drives well, only had one previous owner, and seems to have been well maintained. I plan to visit a mechanic soon to get it checked out. Are there specific parts or issues I should ask about for this model and year? It’s the base model with an inline-four engine.

I’d like to keep it for 3-4 years and then sell it. Does that seem realistic?

I’m driving a 2011 base AWD with 150K miles. No major issues here. The only unscheduled repair I’ve had was replacing the alternator at 140K. I also added aftermarket Bluetooth and a tow hitch. It’s been reliable with good gas mileage and plenty of space. You made a solid choice.

@Laken
Thanks for sharing! The previous owner added a tow hitch to mine too. I like how it drives, and it feels similar to my old Matrix. I regret not researching more before buying, but I’m happy so far.

@Laken
Is yours a 4-cylinder or 6-cylinder? I’m looking at a 4-cylinder today.

Mine was a 4-cylinder. Sold it during the COVID price surge.

I ended up buying one, but there’s a rattling noise during slow acceleration.

@Florence
Check the brakes or rotors. If those are fine, it could be the wheel bearings.

Turned out to be the transmission. Thanks for the input, though.

There’s nothing ‘stupid’ about this purchase. These are very reliable cars. I drove my ‘07 until it hit 200K miles and sold it to a friend who still loves it. With regular maintenance, you’ll get plenty of life out of yours.

@Charlotte
Thanks, I appreciate the reassurance. Do you have any suggestions on what I should ask the mechanic to look for?

I have a 2012 Sport V6 with 302,000 miles. It still runs great. These cars can go the distance with proper maintenance.

Our family had a '98 Camry with 240,000 miles. It was reliable for decades. Toyotas are built to last!

That’s good to hear. I loved my Matrix, and I’m starting to feel the same way about the Rav4. I’ve noticed the 4WD/check engine light comes on after it rains, so I’ll have the mechanic check that out too.

Just a heads-up: it’s called an inline-four (I4), not a V4.

Thanks for the clarification. The more I learn, the less likely I am to get overcharged by mechanics.

How’s the car holding up? Would love an update.

Unfortunately, I was hit by a Silverado going 70 mph that ran a red light. I fractured my spine, but the Rav4 saved my life. It’s a tough vehicle, and I believe it could’ve made it to 200K miles without major issues if it weren’t for the crash.

@Mecarmind1
Wow, that’s intense. Hope you’re doing okay now.

@Mecarmind1
Sorry to hear about the accident. Glad the Rav4 protected you. Sending best wishes for your recovery.
