I watched Toyota’s video on the brake controller, but I’m still confused. It says to slide the lever over to a point… and that’s it.
Aren’t you supposed to set the gain properly and adjust it based on the trailer weight? The way the video explains it, it almost makes it sound like I need to use the lever every time I brake, which obviously isn’t right.
Is there a better step-by-step guide or video out there?
The lever is just for testing if the trailer brakes work.
After hooking up your trailer, start rolling at idle speed and slide the lever all the way over—this will fully engage the trailer brakes. Then, adjust the gain until the trailer brakes lock up, and back it off slightly.
Do this again after loading or unloading the trailer or anytime the weight changes significantly.

Ah, I get it now. You press it all the way left to see how much braking force you’re getting at your current gain setting, then adjust accordingly. Makes way more sense now—thanks!
