Can you really order a Sienna exactly how you want or are dealers just fishing for deposits?

I’m trying to figure out if it’s possible to order a Toyota Sienna with the exact specs you want. Or are the dealers just taking deposits while hoping something close enough comes in?

Dealers are definitely just taking deposits and waiting for something to come along that’s close.

You can’t technically ‘order’ a Toyota. What you do is submit a request for the specs you want and hope the dealer gets a match through their allocation.

Totally different from when I got my X5. I picked every detail, and it was built and shipped to my dealer in two weeks. Such a different way of buying.

No way your X5 was ordered, built, and at the dealer in two weeks. They probably found one in transit or swapped with another dealer.

@Spence
BMWs, Audis, and the like can be ordered to spec.

Sure, but no way they’re ordered, assembled, and shipped in two weeks. That’s not how it works.

Actually, they are. When you place an order, you get a tracking number and can follow the entire production process. Building the car only takes a few days. It’s the setup and shipping that take longer. The X5s are built in South Carolina, so shipping is quick if you’re on the East Coast.

@Sunny
Nope, they didn’t build and ship your car in two weeks. It was likely a dealer trade, and you were told it was a custom order.

No, I worked at the dealer. I know how trades work, and that’s not what happened. You literally get updates on your car’s build and shipment. It’s a quick process for X3s and X5s.

@Sunny
Okay, if you say so.

I ordered an X5 too, and while two weeks does sound fast, I can’t say he’s lying. Mine was fully custom with specific colours and packages. You do get tracking updates. Mine took over a month to be ready at the South Carolina plant. By the way, the factory pickup experience is awesome—free hotel and tour included.

@Fife
I’ve heard about the factory pickup being great. Did you feel like it was worth the wait?

@Spence
I’ve ordered multiple BMWs to spec during my time working with them. If a dealer has an allocation, they can customize it exactly how you want.

Toyota doesn’t work like that at all.

Toyota’s production system is about efficiency and reliability. That’s why they don’t do factory orders.

@Spence
You really don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s impressive how confidently wrong you are.

Which part is hard for you to grasp? He didn’t get a car built and ready in two weeks. Want me to simplify it further?

You’re better off finding a dealer that gets close to what you want rather than hoping for an exact match. Toyota just doesn’t work like BMW or Audi.
