Check engine, VSC, and slip lights on my 2005 4Runner... any ideas?

Hey folks, I’ve got a 2005 Toyota 4Runner 4.7L V8, and recently the check engine, VSC, and slip lights all came on. The weird thing is the truck drives perfectly fine. I had a mechanic scan it, but the only issue that came up was something related to the ABS system. Nothing else seemed relevant. Anyone have a clue what might be going on or what I should check next?

Those lights often come on together if there’s an issue with the ABS or traction control. Did the mechanic say what the ABS code was?

Unfortunately, I didn’t get the exact code. Just that it seemed related to the ABS system. Should I ask for the code next time?

Yeah, definitely. Knowing the exact code would help narrow it down. It could be a bad sensor or even a wiring issue.

I had a similar issue with my 4Runner. Turned out to be a wheel speed sensor. Might be worth checking those.

Interesting, thanks! Did you replace it yourself, or did you take it to a shop?

I did it myself. Not too hard if you’re handy, but make sure you diagnose the right sensor before buying parts.

FYI, sometimes those lights can come on if there’s a bad connection in the ABS module. Did the mechanic check that?

I don’t think they mentioned the ABS module. Is that something I can check myself?

You can, but it’s a bit tricky without the right tools. Might be better to ask your mechanic to take a closer look.

Quick question: Did they mention if your scanner could pick up manufacturer-specific codes? Not all tools can read everything.

Good point. I didn’t ask, but the mechanic said it wasn’t a cheap scanner. Maybe I’ll double-check that.

Yeah, worth verifying. Some generic scanners miss Toyota-specific codes that could explain your issue.

Just throwing it out there—did the lights come on after a battery disconnect or anything like that? Sometimes a reset can trigger weird stuff.

Not that I remember. They just popped up one day. Do you think a battery reset would help?

It might. Disconnect the battery for 10-15 mins, then reconnect. Won’t fix the issue but could clear false codes.
