Does ToyotaCare cover check engine light issues?

Hey y’all, quick question, does ToyotaCare cover the check engine light diagnosis? Got my ‘23 Toyota recently, and now the dreaded light popped up. I know ToyotaCare handles maintenance stuff like oil changes and tire rotations, but what about this? Anyone know if it’s covered?

Nope, ToyotaCare doesn’t cover diagnostics for the check engine light. It’s mainly for routine maintenance like oil changes and inspections.

Ah, that’s a bummer. So what should I do if the light stays on?

@Jackson_smith
First, check your gas cap—if it’s loose, that can trigger the light. If that’s not it, maybe grab a cheap OBD-II scanner or head to an auto parts store. Some will do free diagnostics for you.

@Nash
Good tip, thanks! I’ll check the cap and might try the scanner.

Yeah, CVL is right. ToyotaCare is really just for basic stuff like oil changes and tire rotations. Diagnostics fall outside of that, unfortunately.

I had the same issue! ToyotaCare didn’t cover my check engine light either. Had to pay for the diagnostic myself, but at least the car was still under warranty so the fix was covered.

Ugh, so ToyotaCare won’t cover the diagnostic at all? But the warranty might cover the fix?

@Jackson_smith
Exactly. ToyotaCare is just for routine stuff, but if your car’s still under warranty, you should be able to get the actual repair covered. You’ll just have to pay for the diagnostic.

FYI, if the check engine light comes on, it doesn’t always mean something major. Like CVL said, check your gas cap first. That can actually fix it most of the time.

I’ll definitely check that first. Any other small things that can cause the light to pop on?

@Jackson_smith
Sometimes it’s something minor like a sensor being a little off, but if the light stays on for a few days, definitely get it checked. Better safe than sorry!

Just a heads up, ToyotaCare won’t cover stuff like brake pads, spark plugs, or the check engine light diagnostics. You’ll need to pay out of pocket or get an extended warranty for that kind of stuff.

Ah, I see. So the extended warranty would help with diagnostics too?

@Jackson_smith
Yup! An extended warranty or vehicle service agreement can help cover diagnostics and repairs that ToyotaCare doesn’t. Definitely worth looking into if you’re planning to keep the car for a while.

I’ve got ToyotaCare Plus, which extends the coverage to 4 years or 45,000 miles. It’s great for routine maintenance but still doesn’t cover diagnostics like the check engine light.

Didn’t even know ToyotaCare Plus was a thing! Worth getting?

@Jackson_smith
If you like the peace of mind that comes with ToyotaCare, then yeah, it’s worth it. You get the same maintenance benefits for a longer period. But again, diagnostics aren’t included.
