Got a used 2006 Avalon for 7k… now looking at an 8k repair bill. Worth it?

My rear valve cover leaks too… I could buy a ton of oil for $1400 instead.

Exactly. Unless the gasket is totally shot, just top off the oil and keep an eye on the levels if you drive a lot.

Leaking oil can cause other parts to fail early if it drips on them. But if you know how to safely clean your engine every so often, it’s manageable. Just watch out if it gets on motor mounts or other rubber parts… those will wear out faster.

A lot of this stuff isn’t needed or could be done much cheaper yourself… where are you getting this done? I’d get a second opinion from an independent mechanic.

And honestly, $7k for a 2006 with 193k miles? You got ripped off big time :sob::sob:.

I bought a 2000 model with about 193,000 miles for $3k. It’s at 203,000 now, and I’ve had it for two and a half years. No major issues so far.

$75 for a $10 air filter? That’s beyond crazy.

These prices are wild. $693 for a CV axle?

If the front AC works fine, I’d just stick with that.

Mount and balance tires for that much? This shop is seriously ripping you off.

Honestly, the CV axle price isn’t bad. It’s about what I’ve been charged before for similar work.

This is insane. Some of this can easily be done yourself or for way less. Hope this car lasts you at least another 10 years!

Rear AC blowing hot air? Did they take off the heat shields?

Not that I know of.

Looks like I need to get a second opinion.

Sad how dishonest some mechanics can be.

I’m not an expert, but it seems like they’re charging you twice for some things. Multiple balancing fees? You can change filters yourself to save money. These look like dealership prices. Definitely get another quote and maybe split the work between shops.

This place is scamming you. Save your money and run.

$280 for Seafoam? $75 for an air filter? $1400 for valve cover gaskets? Did they at least offer you a meal before they took your money? $1200 for a new oil pan and gasket? You got completely ripped off. What a mess.

16k total into a 2006 Avalon with 193k miles… ouch.

No way your car needs all that work. My 1997 Lexus leaks a little oil and has a check engine light for an evap leak, but it’s nowhere near this bad. Get another quote and only fix the important stuff.
