Just picked up a used 2022 SR5 with 38k miles. After a week, I’ve noticed a loud groaning noise when shifting from park to reverse or reverse to drive. Once I’m moving, it stops. Anyone else run into this?
Sounds like it might be the brakes. Try pressing the pedal a bit harder when shifting and see if that keeps the truck from rocking slightly—it can make a surprising difference.
Your suspension components might be drier than a retiree in the desert.

Wouldn’t they be sweating though?

Not if they’re somewhere between a raisin and a prune.
It’s likely your brakes. Totally normal—it’s the pads rubbing the rotors as you just start to move. Not really a problem, just how it sounds.
That definitely sounds like a brake thing.
It’s probably the brakes. Happens on a lot of trucks.
Could be suspension too—especially the rubber bushings flexing as the weight shifts. It’s a stretch for a 2022, but not impossible. Any aftermarket parts on it?
My 2024 does this too.
In my case it was the front rotors. Pads were fine, but the rotors had seen better days.
Totally normal. Every 5th gen 4Runner I’ve driven does it—our 2024 Limited and my brother’s 2022 ORP both make that noise. It’s just the nature of the suspension and brakes on a body-on-frame vehicle. Even my 2021 Tacoma has that same groan when going into gear. Nothing to worry about!
Mine does it constantly—it’s normal.
My 2023 has only 3k miles and does the same thing.
