Head Gasket Fails in the 5.7L 3UR-FE

The head gasket fails in cylinder #7 most often, sometimes #5 too.

We have one in the shop right now with the same problem! Never fun seeing that #7 misfire.

My local dealership has been handling more and more of these issues over the last 5 years. My Toyota master mechanic, who used to work at that dealership, has fixed many of them in his home shop, including mine.

He insists on pulling the engine to do the repair, and after seeing what’s involved, I completely agree with him.

How many miles does this usually happen at? I’ve got 94k on mine, bought used, but maintenance has been kept up. Sometimes I think I hear a knock, but when I park next to another 5.7, they sound the same.

Why not send an oil sample to Blackstone for peace of mind?

No need.

For $30 you could know if something’s wrong inside. Cheap insurance if you’re worried.

Why bother when I can just change the oil and filter early and keep things running smoothly?

If my truck’s not having issues yet but I’m past the recommended interval, is it worth doing a preventative gasket replacement to avoid bigger problems?

If you’re not having trouble, just change your coolant more often to avoid the acidic buildup that leads to head gasket problems.

My coworkers and I were talking about this. Most people never change their radiator fluid.

Yeah, wait till people with the new TTV6 start blaming the V8 for having the same issue even though it’s an owner problem, not a design flaw.

A lot of folks don’t even know basic car maintenance. The new engine had issues, but Toyota is replacing them. Sadly, it’ll take a while due to logistics.

People just don’t want to accept personal responsibility.

What’s the pH level of the coolant in it? That would help figure things out.

No clue.

Moral of the story: change your coolant every 50k miles or so to save your head gaskets.

So we should ignore Toyota’s 100k/10-year recommendation then.

Toyota says to inspect your coolant every 15k miles and keep an eye on the level every 5k.

Get test strips and check the pH. Too acidic and you’re asking for trouble.

How many miles did it have? And how can I stop this from happening?

316k … from now on, the coolant in the replacement engine will be flushed every 4 years or 40k miles.

Flush your coolant regularly, ahead of Toyota’s recommendation. Consensus is 50-75k miles to avoid problems.
