High Mileage 2001 Land Cruiser Too Risky?

UZJ100. The only thing I’ve been told is that over 300k is where you start having more major issues with the trans, or similar larger dollar items. Will it happen to this one? Who knows, it could be a million miler. But just something to be cognizant of.

Diesel with 300K+? No worries, it’ll probably go for another 700K. Gas/petrol with 300K+? No way, avoid; probably will need a full rebuild sooner than later.

My 2002 Land Cruiser has nearly 669,000 km on the odometer, but my risk tolerance for cars is pretty high so take with a grain of salt.

Most LC mechanics would say that for a well-maintained cruiser, that’s not especially high miles. It’s more the age—things wear out after 25 years. I have a 2015 with 240k miles that looks and drives like it has 50k miles. This week I’m replacing the original radiator, water pump, etc. I’m in Texas and my biggest worry is that it could overheat and destroy the engine. Figure if I can prevent that I’ll have a good chance of getting well past 500k miles.

One of the best things about the cars is you can pretty reliably determine the condition. There aren’t really any gotchas. Look for corrosion, read the maintenance records, etc. Also depends on your use case—it might be fine as a daily or a weekend car even if you wouldn’t drive it 100 miles into the desert. Post whatever info you have; it could be just fine.

Buy it if you’re ok wrenching on it or fixing it. For me, my 100 series is something I plan to keep forever regardless of what I have to do to it. I’ll put engines, transmissions, you name it in that thing in order to drive it forever.
