How Can I Lower My Car Insurance?

I’m 24 years old, just got my driver’s license a year ago, and drive a 2011 Prius with 50k miles in Las Vegas. I haven’t had any tickets or accidents, but my insurance is $1,100 a month. This feels insane. Any advice?

Shop around for different insurance companies and consider reducing your coverages. Progressive can be affordable in some cases.

Sometimes they are. I was with them for 20 years but switched to Geico when Progressive raised my rates. Loyalty doesn’t seem to pay off anymore.

@Finch
Loyalty doesn’t mean much to most companies these days. They focus on getting new customers since insurance is mandatory.

At 18, Progressive quoted me $400/month for a Pontiac G6. Geico offered $127/month with better coverage. For new drivers, Geico seems to be a good option.

I pay $50 a month for the same car with Geico.

Who is your insurer?

Geico. My coverage includes comprehensive, uninsured motorist protection, emergency roadside assistance, and rental reimbursement.

Oh, I don’t drink or smoke.

Consider liability-only insurance and shop around every six months.

If I only have liability, who pays if my car gets damaged?

If it’s your fault, no one. If the other driver is at fault, their liability coverage should pay. It’s a risk, but if the car’s value is low, it might make sense.

Sell the car and use a bike or public transport.

I do food delivery for work, so I need a car.

Have you considered a scooter or moped? They’re cheaper to insure and run.

Get insured with any company for a month. Afterward, your quotes should drop significantly because you’ll have continuous coverage, which many companies value.

As a fellow Las Vegas resident, I can tell you rates here are crazy. I switched from Geico to Progressive and cut my premium from $405 to $180 a month. Being young in Vegas definitely impacts your rates.
