How do I customize the startup and shutdown screens on my 11th/12th gen Corolla? Anyone done it?

By request: A guide on personalizing your 11th/12th gen Corolla’s startup and shutdown screens
Yesterday, I shared a video showing how I customized the startup/shutdown screens on my wife’s 2017 Corolla, and several of you asked for a tutorial on how to do the same. The procedure might vary slightly for newer models, so refer to your owner’s manual if you encounter any difficulties.

What you’ll need:

  • A 4GB/8GB FAT32 formatted USB flash drive (you may need to test a few different drives)
  • Up to six JPG images (3 for startup, 3 for shutdown) with a resolution between 1024x768px and 1200x800px

Preparation:

Ensure your USB flash drive is formatted as FAT32 on Windows/Mac before transferring images. Corollas require a specific folder structure for the images, so create two folders on the root of your drive: one named “StartupImage” and the other “DisplayOffImage.”

Add up to three JPG images to each folder, with a resolution no higher than 1200x800. I’ve found that 1024x768 works well, though you may notice slight cropping at the top and bottom. Name the images 1.jpg, 2.jpg, and 3.jpg.

Customizing your startup/shutdown screens:

Find the USB Media port in your car and insert the USB flash drive. It’s typically located near the Aux input or 12V DC power/cigarette lighter.

Switch the key to the accessory position or, if you have push-button start, turn on the car.

Turn on the touch display and check that your USB drive is recognized by going to the Home screen. Your drive should appear in the available sources list. I had to try three different drives before one was recognized.

Go to the Apps screen. Then, go to Settings → General and scroll down to find “Customize Startup Image” and “Customize Display Off Image.” Select either option, as the process is the same for both. Be sure to repeat the steps for both settings.

On the new screen, click the Transfer button at the bottom left. Your Corolla can store up to three custom startup/shutdown images, which will automatically load from your drive. Choose your preferred image for either startup or shutdown and press OK.

If you ever want to remove or replace any of the custom images, simply press Delete All next to the Transfer button on the Customize screens.

*Note: The selected image will remain until you turn off your car, but will reset to the default Toyota logo screen each time you access the customization options.

Mine doesn’t have that option in the general setting. Maybe my unit needs a software update.

What year/model is your Corolla?

2019 Le

Saving this but realistically I’ll probably never do it because it looks quite hard.

Anyone know if this works on a 2022?
