How many sandbags and what weight do you use in the snow?

I have all terrains on my summer set. I just put 2 of my summer wheels in the back for weight. It’s also easier than getting out the spare tire when it’s full of snow or ice if I get a flat.

Buy 2-3 Costco 40 lb cases of cat litter. The case has 4 ten pound bags each. Best if you have a cat because you can use it in spring. The cat litter will give more grip on ice if you ever need to help someone get unstuck and you only tear open one bag to do it.

First winter in the new truck and just got 6 50lb bags which seems like overkill but was headed up into the mountains and would rather be overkill. Might drop two bags after this week as it doesn’t seem like 300 is really needed.

During winter I add 3 sandbags. I already keep 50ish lbs of tools and recovery gear in the bed of the truck. All the weight in the world won’t help if you don’t change your driving and expectations.

Usually 450-650 lbs sand. Used to work great in my 91, still works great in my 22.

Mountains of Colorado here. I usually do 4x70lb bags over the axle, plus my camper shell.

But I drive a regular cab 1st gen with a 6ft bed, so the weight distribution is pretty light in the rear. Something like a double cab short bed 3rd gen probably doesn’t need extra weight in the rear as much.

Good tires and don’t bother with the weight besides my shell and recovery gear

A cheap dedicated snow tire is better than a “snow rated” all season.
My Duratracs weren’t bad on my old Canyon, but I bought some cheap off brand winter tires on cheap wheels to protect my summer wheels and damn, those cheap winter tires opened my eyes.

I’ve always had winter tires on every vehicle since then.
