How much do you pay for car insurance?

I just bought (financed) a certified pre-owned 2021 Toyota CH-R LE. I like the car, but this is my first Toyota, and I’ve heard insurance tends to be higher for them.

My last car was a certified pre-owned 2021 Honda HR-V, and I was paying $218 a month. Now, my insurance for the Toyota is jumping to $312.

I’m going to shop around tomorrow to see if I can get a better deal. From what I’ve seen in other posts, most people seem to pay under $200, but I know rates have been going up, especially in Houston.

Curious—how much do you pay for your car insurance?

Edit: I called my insurance provider to double-check the numbers (I’m on my dad’s policy). My rate did go up, but I’ll actually be paying about $270 a month, not $312. Still feels high compared to what some of you are paying. I started checking rates with other companies, and the lowest I found so far was Geico at $249/month.

I also reached out to an insurance agent to see if there are other options.

Appreciate all the feedback!

I’m in Ontario, Canada, and I have a 2019 CH-R. I pay $78 a month.

Do you have full coverage? I’m in Ontario too (44, no accidents or tickets), and I was just quoted $200/month for the same car. We even bundle our insurance with other policies. If you’re fully covered, I’d love to know your insurer so I can switch!

Wow, your insurance is expensive! In the UK, I pay about £420 per year.

I’m in Estonia. I pay €120 a year for basic insurance and €444 a year for full coverage. Paying over €100 per month sounds crazy to me.

I got a 2021 Certified Pre-Owned XLE this year in California. My wife and I (both 28, no accidents) pay $231 with AAA.

We were shocked because most other companies quoted us around $400. The only downside is it’s a one-year policy, so we had to pay a $1000 down payment to start. Next year, our rate should go up to $300.

This covers both our cars—a 2021 CH-R and a 2010 Camry.

Insurance rates depend mostly on age, driving experience, and location. I pay $150 CAD a month as a 25-year-old in southern Ontario for a 2018 CH-R. But if I lived in Toronto, I could easily be paying $100 more.

@Eliot
Are you fully insured? I just got a quote from my provider (Co-operators) in Cambridge for $210/month. No accidents, no tickets, 44 years old, been driving since I was 16. Seems high compared to yours. Who’s your insurer?

@Tru
Yeah, I have full coverage with a $1000 deductible. I’m 26, been driving since 2019, and have two minor speeding tickets but no accidents. I’m with Belair.

When I first started driving, I paid $250 a month for a 2010 Nissan Rogue, and that was just one-way coverage. Insurance prices vary a lot by location—Toronto and the GTA are way more expensive.

@Eliot
Ah, I thought you meant southwestern Ontario, not southern Ontario. Cambridge is about an hour west of Toronto, so it’s not really GTA. I’ve heard good things about Belair, though—I’ll give them a call. Thanks!

@Tru
No problem, good luck!

Mine is only $80 because I’m on my husband’s policy. But I asked how much it would be if I had my own policy… $386 a month here in Florida. Insane!

What’s going on with insurance in the U.S.? I pay €250 per year in Greece.

2021 XLE, full coverage with State Farm—$144 a month. I had a windshield replacement claim, and my rate went up from $122 to $144.

They classify the CH-R as an SUV, which makes it more expensive. Funny thing is, a Lexus UX 250h and a RAV4 both had lower quotes than my CH-R.

@Poe
Wow, I thought switching from my HR-V wouldn’t change much since they’re both subcompacts. The cheapest I’ve found so far is Geico at $249/month.

Liberty Mutual gave me a lower rate when I checked. I stayed with State Farm because bundling my house insurance made it cheaper overall, but it’s worth checking out.

@Poe
Good to know! I reached out to an agent, so I’ll see if I have better options. If not, I’ll try again in 6–12 months and hope rates improve.

When I first got my 2020 CH-R, I paid around $210 a month. Over the last year and a half, my rate has gone up to $325—no claims, no accidents.

Insurance feels like a scam until you actually need it.

28-year-old single male in Florida, driving a 2021 CH-R. I pay $215/month for full coverage.

I have a 2018 CH-R in California. Good driving record, and I still pay $203 a month with AAA. :sob:
