I’m trying to figure out the cost of insurance for my 2023 Subaru Forester, which is financed for $35,000. This is my first time getting my own insurance. I was on another policy before but wasn’t the primary holder. I got my driver’s license in 2017.
The dealer connected me with a broker who quoted $250 per month with Progressive for a 6-month policy that would need renewal. This is for a car in Washington, zip code 98012.
I’m planning to reach out to State Farm, Geico, Costco Connect, and Amica. Are there any local insurance providers you would recommend checking out?
Welcome to Washington. Insurance here isn’t cheap.
I’ve had a good experience with Babbit Insurance brokers. They’re based in Enumclaw but can help you no matter where you are in the state. They shop around for the best rate that fits your needs.
Your quote seems pretty standard. Do you have any tickets or claims? Is this your first time having your own policy, or has there been a gap in coverage?
Your rate depends on your zip code, age, and provider.
Make sure to read up on insurance options. There’s more to it than just collision or liability. Some policies include things like gap coverage, full vs. limited tort, and uninsured motorist protection. Even your estimated mileage can impact the price.
Since your car is new and your main vehicle, you’ll probably want a policy that covers a bit more.
Do you need gap insurance? Not all companies offer it. I know Geico doesn’t.
What exactly is gap insurance?
Gap insurance covers the difference between what your car is worth and what you owe on your loan if your car gets totaled.
For example, if your car is worth $30,000 but you still owe $35,000, your regular insurance will only pay the $30,000. You’d still have to pay the extra $5,000. Gap insurance covers that difference.
If you put down a small down payment or nothing at all, you’ll probably want gap insurance since cars lose value fast.
@Zya
That makes sense. I put $0 down, so I probably need gap coverage. I asked Amica about it, and they called it ‘loan/lease payoff’ instead of gap insurance.

Yep, same thing. Different companies use different names for it.
I pay $161 total for a 2022 Ascent Limited, a 2016 Outback Limited, and a 2002 Jeep Wrangler. That includes my 18-year-old son on the policy, full coverage, and $1,000 deductible. I’m in Central Ohio.

Which company do you use? And how long have you had your license?
Best quote I’ve found so far is Amica at $130 per month for one car.
