How much should I try to haggle?

I’m looking at a new OBW and the MSRP is $41,335, with a dealer discount bringing the price down. They also offer 2.9% financing. The salesman told me there isn’t much room left to negotiate on price. I’m wondering if I should try to push for a better deal. What other perks could I ask for if there’s no more room to lower the price? I usually do pretty well with haggling, and I’ve surprised some salespeople in the past, but it’s been a long time since I bought a new car. Anyone have tips on what I could try?

Call Subaru of America and say you’re considering other cars. Ask if they have any current incentives. I did that when I bought my car and got a $500 rebate after I negotiated a good price.

Thanks, that’s a great idea!

@Keir
Be sure to keep that rebate info to yourself until you’ve agreed on a price so you can get the lowest deal possible.

Try negotiating for TWO full tanks of gas. You might be surprised.

I wasn’t sure if you were joking, but you made me laugh!

I was just having fun! Hope you manage to get a good deal though, I’m not great at haggling.

Not sure if you’d consider this, but I picked up a '24 with just 3.4k miles, fully loaded. It was basically new, and I got it for $37k. Maybe consider a lightly used car?

I thought about going used, but the 2.9% financing on new cars makes it about the same price overall. Plus, I can’t find any used Wilderness models.

@Keir
That makes sense, you can’t beat 2.9%! Good luck, though, the OBW is a great choice.

I negotiated 15% off MSRP on a new Outback a couple of months ago. Same price as a used one! Might be worth trying.

I recently bought a Limited and got 20% off sticker price. The dealer added some stuff like LED lighting and side mirror film, which I didn’t really need but they helped me get the deal.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any other Subaru dealers nearby to check. Otherwise, I’d definitely try that.

@Keir
You might need to expand your search a bit and see if you can find a better deal further out. Would you be willing to drive a couple of hundred miles for a better price? Some dealers will beat a price if you show them a competitor’s deal.

If you want, you could just install the LEDs yourself. It’s a simple swap for the interior lights.

@Quin
What LEDs are they talking about?

I think it’s the interior LED lights. It’s just changing the bulbs out.

@Quin
They’re already part of the car. I don’t think the dealer will remove them for me.

Oh, I see. Either way, the value of the Outback is going to be worth it over time.

They won’t remove the accessories, but if you pick a car with options you like, you can get a better deal. My wife loves the door LED projectors.
