Hybrid battery replacement... recalibration or new pack?

I recently bought an 07 Camry Hybrid for my son. It had a dead 12V battery, so I replaced it with a new OEM Panasonic battery from the dealer. Now, the check engine light is on, and the message center says ‘check hybrid system.’ My scanner shows a code indicating the hybrid battery cell needs replacing. Is it normal for this to happen after replacing the 12V battery? Could it just be the system needing time to recalibrate, or does the hybrid battery actually need replacing? Any advice on testing or next steps would be appreciated!

If you installed the battery yourself, you might want to double-check everything. Maybe ask the dealer for advice since it’s an OEM battery.

Yeah, I did the installation myself. Everything seemed fine during install. Hoping it’s just a reset issue.

Was it a brand-new Panasonic battery or a refurbished one? Refurbished ones sometimes only have specific cells replaced, which can lead to issues.

It was brand new from the dealer, so I don’t think that’s the issue.

Did you replace the 12V battery or the hybrid (HV) battery? People sometimes mix them up when troubleshooting.

It was the 12V battery that I replaced, not the hybrid one.

Got it. If the hybrid battery is the original, it’s likely time for a replacement. They usually last about 10-15 years.

Sounds like the hybrid battery is failing. It’s separate from the 12V battery and unfortunately costs a lot to replace. Hopefully, the rest of the car is in great shape!

Yeah, I got it for $2,000 from a friend. It’s got new brakes, tires, and no rust, so I don’t mind putting money into it. Any thoughts on how reliable refurbished battery packs are?

Refurbished packs can be hit or miss. If you’re keeping the car for a while, I’d go for a new Toyota battery for peace of mind.

If you want to test the battery condition, the ‘Dr. Prius’ app is great. It can check individual battery cells and overall health.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll download the app and see what it shows.
