I’ve had a 2011 Prius for awhiiiile now and am in the market for a new car soon. I’ve always wanted a hybrid suv and was initially holding out for the forester hybrid but the fuel efficiency and design are awful. I like boxy cars and was super excited about the Hyundai Santa Fe but the safety rating isn’t as high as I’d like. the Honda crv is ranking highest for safety and fuel efficiency etc but I don’t love it and my dad recently got a Honda prologue and I hate it and imagine the crv will be very similar
I love my Prius but I inherited it and I’ve always wanted an SUV but haven’t made the leap because my car is very reliable and paid off and fairly cheap to maintain etc. changed battery last year and everything else just got a tune-up recently as well, has about 180k miles and going strong!

RAV4 Hybrid or Corolla Cross Hybrid would be obvious choices if you’re coming from a Prius
thank you!! I was looking into these and they seem great!
I wanted a Subaru initially and considered outback but the mileage is also bad. which is wild since doesnt Toyota own Subaru now? how is the mileage not great if they have access to the same hybrid technology etc
@Mica
Suburu is finally catching up in the hybrid department and that probably has something to do with Toyota taking a greater stake in Suburu, but their AWD system is naturally going to give you worse mileage because it’s AWD all the time, not just when it detects slippage. I have a Prius and a RAV4 and the only reason I bought the RAV4 was because I couldn’t snag a hybrid Suburu at the time. The RAV4 is a great car and I’m really happy with it, but even with snow tires it doesn’t hold a candle to my old Suburus.

That’s so sad. I had a manual Subaru Forester that I LOVED because of the AWD and it being V4.
Sigh.
The Forester is a boxer 4, not a V unless you want to define it as a V with a bank angle of 180 degrees, which isn’t accurate as the conrods each have their own crank throw; V engines are generally defined as having opposed pistons sharing a crank.
Ferrari famously corrects people describing their flat-12 engines as ‘boxers;’ technically they are V12 engines with a bank angle of 180 degrees. In terms of vibration you can think of them as two straight sixes back-to-back, which is actually quite smooth.
@jefferson
this is helpful thank you! I heard the new rav4s are AWD all the time too, is that not true? I definitely enjoying camping and hiking so I’d want a reliable car for that, but I don’t live where it snows so not super concerned there necessarily
ugh ya I feel like I’ve heard a lotttt of things about how older Subarus are the best Subarus. they don’t make cars like they used to, that’s forsure!
I’d be open to settling for an outback instead of a forester if the mileage wasn’t so bad; it’s definitely not as ugly as the new forester lol but I hate how a lot of cars are just starting to look like each other. I don’t want an outback because it’s not a proper SUV and I like being higher up and the feel of an suv and want space for a dog crate and camping etc
