ICS malfunction keeps coming back, what is going on?

Four months ago my 2018 XSE showed an ICS malfunction warning. I took it in and they told me it was a bad spark plug. After a $600 tune-up, everything seemed fine. Now today, sitting at a stoplight, the same ICS code popped up again. Does anyone else have experience with this happening? Could it be something besides the spark plugs? Feeling frustrated with my Camry right now.

ICS doesn’t even have anything to do with the engine. That’s weird. ICS is Intelligent Clearance Sonar. Toyota had a technical bulletin for this back in 2019. I wonder if they applied that update. It could be the sensors, the module, or even a fuse.

Yeah, I’m confused too. Seems like any misfire makes the whole system freak out.

Got in the car this morning and now ALL the warning lights are on. A friend at work scanned the codes, and it’s showing a misfire in cylinder 3.

Did you ever figure out what caused it? I’m getting the ICS malfunction plus a check engine light. My OBD2 scan is showing P0037, something with the O2 sensor heater circuit.

Not yet. My dad, who used to be a mechanic, checked the code, and it’s showing a misfire in cylinder 3. He reset it, and it stayed off for a while, but now it’s back. I don’t have time to leave my car at the dealer, so I’m just driving around with the warning lights on. Hoping to take it in next week.

Any update on the ICS issue? Still dealing with it?

Yeah, and it wasn’t good news. Turns out the head gasket was bad. Had to wait two months for parts and ended up getting an engine rebuild. The good part was it happened five months before my warranty expired, so Toyota covered everything, including a rental car for two months. It would have cost thousands otherwise. I kept the car for a few more weeks after that, but I sold it because I didn’t want to deal with any more surprises. I still miss that Camry, though.

@Zya
My issue might be different since my code is for the O2 sensor. But if you’re getting misfire codes, maybe try swapping the ignition coil on cylinder 3 and see if it helps.

Did changing the coil help? Still having issues?

So what ended up being the problem?

For me, it turned out to be the purge flow actuator. Replaced it, and everything went back to normal.

I replaced my purge valve about six months ago, and it fixed everything, but now the ICS malfunction is showing up again. No obvious issues, but the check engine and ICS lights are both on.

I think the ICS malfunction was just being triggered by the check engine light. Once I fixed the engine issue, the ICS warning disappeared too.
