Is a keyed ignition safer from theft than push start?

Might be a dumb question, but I’ve been thinking about this.

I know thieves can use an RFID scanner to steal a car with push start.

And if a car has a regular key ignition, they can just jam a screwdriver in there and take off, right?

So does it actually make sense to upgrade to the SR5 just to have push start, or am I overthinking it?

Push start cars are actually easier to steal, but there’s a way to prevent it. If you hold the lock button and double tap unlock, your key stops ‘talking’ to your truck, so nobody can steal the signal. Just tap unlock again when you need it back to normal.

I do this for both my keys. Also keep my spare in an RFID-blocking gun safe (it blocks all signals, not just RFID). Solid advice, have an upvote.

Same here. Keeping the spare that way seems like the best move.

Cool username. You into Acidez?

@Hutton
Never heard of them.

@Wade
Wait, I think I’m misunderstanding.

I’m looking at the model WITHOUT push start… Are you saying the one with push start is more at risk?

Yeah, my bad. Push start Tacomas are the ones that are more likely to be stolen. If you’re careful and know the risks, it probably doesn’t make a huge difference either way.

@Wade
You should edit your original comment—it sounds like you’re saying keyed ignitions are easier to steal.

Also, good tip about disabling RFID.

Good call. Don’t want to mislead anyone.

@Wade
Any downside to disabling the key signal like that?

Only thing is the proximity unlock won’t work. Not a big deal for me.

Mine doesn’t even have that feature, so I guess I don’t need to worry about it.

@Wade
I work in cybersecurity, and yeah, you’re mostly right… but honestly, stealing these trucks is still stupidly easy. A thief could plant a small device near your truck to record unlock signals over a few days and use them later. There’s a reason Tacomas get stolen so often.

@Wolf
If we’re talking that level of effort, couldn’t someone do this with almost any car?
