Is Avalon still the same quality as before?

I used to love our 2010 Avalon. It’s still going strong. Now I’m thinking about getting a 2022 Nightshade model. Does anyone know if they are still as reliable as they used to be?

I got a 2021 hybrid limited with 15k miles. I’ve been getting over 500 miles per tank on just 12 gallons. Really loving this car so far.

If you buy another Avalon, it will definitely be a hybrid.

That’s exactly what I want to hear .

That sounds crazy. You’re going way too slow if you’re getting 500 miles to a tank. I have a 22 and I don’t get anywhere near that, especially around town.

@Tai
I keep mine in eco mode and don’t rush to get anywhere. I usually drive in the slow lane and take my foot off the gas, going into ev mode to coast as much as possible. It’s not dangerous, just efficient.

It’s Toyota. Nothing beats their mechanical quality.

This is true. I owned a 2003 and now I have a 2013 Limited. The mechanics are top-notch on both, but… the 2003 felt more like Toyota’s version of a Buick – soft, quiet, and really well-made. I sold it at 220k miles with no issues. But the 2013… the leather on the driver’s seat is cracking and the dashboard is starting to peel off some chrome. It’s like they took a step back in interior quality. I’m not sure I’d buy another Avalon unless they improve that.

@Bliss
That’s exactly like my 13 Avalon. The leather’s cracking and the chrome is coming off.

@Bliss
I have a 2006 Avalon, and the dash is cracked. It’s soft leather, not meant for the sun. Still, it’s comfortable and a great highway car. I also have a 23 Tundra now, but the Avalon is my daily driver for long commutes.

@mary
I can confirm, my 2006 Avalon had the same cracked dash and it’s my daily for a 120-mile commute. Still reliable though.

I added a $120 carplay stereo. It’s great for highway driving.

@mary
I did the same. Do you have the same car as me, is it blue?

I think I have the most common colour, champagne gold. It was my in-laws’ car.

@Bliss
I have a 2014 limited and have the same issue with the driver seat leather.

What other brands have you used a lot?

It’s hard to compare, since the last generation Avalon hasn’t been around long enough. I have a 2021 XSE Nightshade and it’s been great, but it only has 13,500 miles. I guess I’ll know more in 20 years! :sweat_smile: The Nightshade ride is firmer compared to the Limited, but the engine is powerful. If you want a soft ride, it’s not for you. It’s better for the highway.

@GARAGETOY
I agree, as a fellow Nightshade owner. I’d only recommend the Limited. If the Limited isn’t available, go for the base model. The Nightshade just doesn’t match what the car is meant for, as OP mentioned.

@Oswin
I got a big discount on mine in 2021. Otherwise, I would have gone for the Limited. I don’t mind the sporty feel, or else I would have paid $6k more for the Limited. It has pros and cons – firmer ride but better control.
