I really like my Impreza hatchback, but I’m looking for something with more space and ground clearance. My Impreza was made in Japan based on its VIN. I’m considering the Forester and the Outback. I’ve heard the Outback is made in the US, and the Forester is made in Japan. Is that true? Does it matter to you?
Outbacks are built at Subaru’s plant in Lafayette, Indiana.
Yes, that’s true for now. There have been rumors that Outback production might move back to Japan with the next generation, even though the Outback is getting discontinued there. Also, there were talks about making the Forester in the US after the Legacy production ends, but that hasn’t happened yet.
@Bret
Subaru plans to move Outback production to Japan in fall of 2025. They’re also bringing the Forester and Forester hybrid to the US, according to a WLFI interview with Subaru’s VP.
Yes, currently the Outback is made in the US and the Forester in Japan. But honestly, I don’t think it matters. All the parts are basically the same. Choose whichever you like more.

Same parts? The engine and transmission, sure. But the rest of the vehicle could be different.
It’s made in the US right now, but it might go back to Japan soon.

The Outbacks delivered in Australia are made in Japan, which is a good thing for quality. Plus, the steering wheel is on the right side!
It’s made in Indiana, USA
It depends where you buy it. If you’re in the USA or Canada, it’s coming from the Indiana plant. But if you buy in Europe, Australia, or other regions, it’s made in Japan.
