Does anyone know if Toyota ATF WS is a synthetic transmission fluid? I was thinking of changing mine from WS to AMSOIL Signature Series ATF, which is supposed to be compatible with Toyota WS. Anyone have thoughts on making that switch?
When I changed my fluid, I got it from the dealer. For me, it’s not worth the risk to save $10.
I get what you’re saying, but switching to AMSOIL isn’t about saving money. AMSOIL ATF is $22 per quart, so it’s more expensive. I’m considering it because it handles hot and cold temps better and provides better lubrication.
Why do you think it’s ‘better’? Do you know what makes it different from Toyota’s ATF? If you don’t know, it might not be a good idea to change it.
I think it’s better because every other AMSOIL fluid I’ve used is top-notch compared to anything else. I put their ATF in my other vehicle and noticed a 3 MPG improvement.
I also use their motor oil, and the engine runs smoother, quieter, and uses less oil than with the Toyota-branded oil.

Switching transmission fluid in modern cars can be risky. You might want to check with your local service department to see if they think it’s safe.

Good idea. This is for my 2009 Corolla, so it’s modern compared to my ‘98, but not as advanced as today’s models. It still has a dipstick. I’ve done a few drain and fills with WS over the years.

If you’ve been doing drain and fills, changing the filter and dropping the pan shouldn’t be an issue. I just did that on my car recently. I still recommend sticking with Toyota fluid since that’s what the transmission is designed for.

I changed the filter during my last drain and fill. I’ve replaced the filter twice since I bought the car used 9 years ago with 80k miles, and it’s now at 174k. I’ve done 2 filter changes and 4 or 5 drain and fills—all with Toyota fluid and filters. I was just considering switching, but I don’t need to.

Honestly, Castrol Transmax Import MV works fine for Toyota T-IV applications. I’m running MaxLife in my LS430 with no problems, and it calls for WS. Lots of cars use either T-IV or WS fluids, and aftermarket options work well for those.

WS is a synthetic group III base stock, and most aftermarket fluids are the same, except for AMSOIL SS and Red Line D6, which use PAO/POE base stocks. Do what feels right for you. MaxLife works fine as a WS replacement, but if you feel any shudder or slipping, switch back to WS. Setting the fluid level is important, though—you’ll need Techstream or a scan tool unless your car has a dipstick.

Yes, WS is synthetic. Toyota started using synthetic transmission fluid around 2003 with T-IV and then moved to WS.
