Does anyone here have experience with Toyota Insurance in New Zealand? I just got a new car and am deciding between Toyota Insurance ($1300) and AA ($1400) for comprehensive coverage.
Toyota’s policy includes replacing the car with a new model if totaled in the first three years, plus glass and rental cover at no extra cost. On the other hand, AA replaces like-for-like and charges extra for glass and rentals.
If Toyota is difficult to work with for claims, I’d rather pay a bit more for AA. What’s your experience with either of these insurers? Happy to answer any questions!
I’ve had Toyota Insurance and had no issues with a $5k claim after someone reversed into the front of my car. They sorted it out efficiently. Toyota Insurance in New Zealand is underwritten by AIOI Insurance, so their reputation is worth looking into as well.
I considered AA but found they don’t cover the cost of sourcing parts from overseas if they aren’t available locally. That’s fine for common models, but I had a windshield replacement sourced from France, and my insurer covered it. AA would’ve charged me for shipping.

That’s an interesting point. I recently had to get a taillight shipped from Japan for a repair, but the cost was covered since it wasn’t my fault.
I’ve been with Toyota Insurance for several years and found their rates competitive. Claim processing has been smooth, and they follow up after repairs. When making a claim, they provide a list of authorized repair shops, and the process is quick. No major claims yet, but for small ones, they’ve been excellent. Roadside assistance is included, and that’s been a big plus.
Toyota Insurance worked out well for me. I once had my Caldina totaled, and they paid $7k, even though I was trying to sell it for $5k before. Definitely worth it in my experience.
Make sure to double-check the liability cover. I once opened my car door, and the wind pushed it into another car. My plan didn’t include liability, so I had to pay the excess myself. I’m with State now, and they cover that situation without an excess.
I went with Toyota Insurance for my Rav4 in 2021 because it was cheaper and offered similar coverage to others. I had to make a claim after a rock hit my hood, and the process was fine, though they prefer claims to be submitted online instead of over the phone. I used their suggested shop, and they guarantee the paint repair for the car’s lifetime. I also have unlimited windshield replacements, which has been useful with the state of the roads here.
I’m with Cove, which is also through AIOI. I recently crashed my car, and while they approved the claim, it took a few days. It was about three days for a response and five more to accept the claim after the inspection.
