Just found out about the seatbelt chime feature

I usually have my 35 lb heeler in the back, but he jumped up front when I went to run an errand. I came back and was only a mile from home, so I didn’t bother to wrestle him back to the backseat. I had no idea how loud and annoying the seatbelt chime is. It completely overpowers the radio.

You don’t need to buy anything. Just search for the 20 buckle disable method. It works on both our 2020s and my mom’s 2024 Crosstrek.

Do you need to do that for each seatbelt, or does one buckle fix it for all?

@Zyler
I can only speak for the rear seat. I’m not sure about the front. But it works! As soon as you turn on your car (don’t start it), put the seatbelt into the buckle 20 times as fast as you can in under a minute. This will disable the annoying chime. It will reset if you remove or replace the battery.

@Orin
Is this real? It sounds like a cheat code from the 90s!

Definitely works. I just got a 2025 Forester last week and tried it. It worked for me!

@Orin
Does this work for the rear too?

@Orin
It works for the rear as well? I know it works for the front, but wasn’t sure about the back.

I’ve been trying to find a document or service bulletin confirming that this doesn’t turn off the airbags’ sensors (the ones that detect if a seat is unoccupied). It seems unlikely, but I’m cautious.

@Stormy
I don’t think it disables the airbags. I believe it was likely added to disable the chime during service. Disabling airbags would be a huge liability.

You can silence the seatbelt chime by following these steps:

  1. Turn the key to ON, but don’t start the engine. If you have keyless ignition, press the button to turn on the vehicle.
  2. Buckle and unbuckle the seatbelt 20 times within 30 seconds. You need to be quick!
  3. Immediately turn the key off and remove it from the ignition. If keyless, press the button to turn it off.

If done correctly, the chime will be silenced and stay off until the car battery dies or is disconnected.

@Deen
Warning: If you do this incorrectly, you might summon a minor demon.

I’ll draw some binding runes around the car first. Maybe I can control the little demon.

@Deen
Thank you so much for this! :raised_hands::raised_hands::raised_hands: I ran to my garage and tried it — the problem is solved.

@Deen
I can confirm this works. I’ve done it multiple times.

@Deen
Do I need to do this for each seatbelt?

Just the driver’s seat. That’s enough.

So doing it on any seatbelt will silence all of them?

No, just the driver’s seat.

@Deen
This is the way.
