Hey everyone, just picked up a 2024 Rav4 and noticed this thing on the driver’s side of the windshield. Anyone know what it does
That’s a touch keypad. Here’s a link to the manual: http://toyotaparts.sparkstoyota.com/install/00016-00506-23-taco.pdf

Wait, Toyota actually makes these? The manual says it works for all models, that’s wild
@Chandler
It mentions the 2023 Tacoma in the doc and gives steps for that one. Not sure how it fits all models, the wiring must be different

Check page 14—it has a guide for where to mount it on different cars, including the Rav4
How do you even set this up? Just got a used Rav4 and had no idea what it was for
So you can unlock the car with a PIN instead of a key? Feels kinda risky

Not for everyone, but if you’re worried about losing your key fob, this is way better than hiding a spare under the tire
@Dax
Makes sense. Can you start the car with it too?

Nope, just unlocks the door. Think about going to the beach—easy to lose keys there. With this, you can leave the fob inside and use the code to get in
@Fin
Wait, so you can lock the fob inside the car if you have this?

Yeah, you might need to turn the fob off first (like holding the lock button and pressing unlock a few times) or use a faraday pouch. These PIN locks were big in the 2000s but faded with keyless entry. Super handy if you’re hiking or kayaking—no need to hide a key outside

Oops, meant to reply to your question

Ford’s had these for like 20 years

We’ve got one on our Ford. Works great for stuff like softball games or airport parking

My parents had an ’86 Nissan Maxima with one, so it’s been around forever. Looked just like this one from Doug Demuro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcKjCzd4Pyw

My friend uses this on her Camry, but she still locked herself out last week. Fob was inside and she had to call a locksmith

Only if you pick a bad PIN. Pretty sure it locks you out after too many tries
I’ve seen these on Turo rentals so people can get into the car without a key
Seems pretty obvious what it is
