Lost my wheel lock key… how do I get a replacement

I need help finding a replacement wheel lock key for my 2014 car. Any advice would be really helpful.

If you don’t have the code that came with the key, getting a new one might not be possible. Dealers usually have universal keys. You might need to remove the current lock and buy a new set.

I had to do this with another car. Some dealers don’t have universal keys, so call around first. It’s a simple service though. A new set of security lug nuts and a key costs around $150. Make sure to keep copies of the paperwork and store the key with your spare tire tools so you don’t lose it again. If you lose the key but have the code, you can call the manufacturer, give them the code, and they’ll send a new one. The code tells them the shape of your key so they can match it.

Harbor Freight sells a master set of wheel lock keys. One might work for you.

If that doesn’t work, you can try hammering on an extractor or welding a nut onto the lock and using a breaker bar.

I might get this set. I’ll just give it to my brother—he’s planning to open an auto shop.

Good luck! Let me know if it works. I’m curious about this set.

That set won’t work. McGard makes your wheel lock, and each manufacturer has different locks. For example, Honda has 20 different ones.

Don’t bother. It’s a Toyota wheel lock. If you don’t have the key, just go to a Toyota dealer and ask them to replace the locks with regular lug nuts.

If you don’t have the code, you’ll probably need to drill out the lock and get a new set, possibly with new studs.

Hammer a 12-point socket onto the lock, then remove it like a normal lug nut. Replace it with a regular one.

This is the way! I’ve done this countless times when I worked at Sears and Pep Boys. Just hammer a socket on and zip it off. Replace it with a regular lug nut. Wheel locks are pointless—if someone wants to steal your rims, they’ll just hammer a socket on and take them anyway.

Have you checked the glove box, console, or where you keep the jack and lug wrench? Sometimes the key is hiding there.

That’s a McGard wheel lock. Any Toyota dealer will have a master set to remove it. They can also get the part number and order you a new key. It should cost less than $20.

If you don’t have the paperwork with the code, they can’t just give you a key. You’ll need to buy a whole new set of matching lug nuts and keys.

@Macon
Not true. I’ve worked at a Toyota dealer for 30 years. We have master sets of McGard locks. Each master key has a number that can be used to order a new key. They just need to match the pattern. This one is easy to spot—it’s got a three-sided shape I call the Triangle.

When my dealer lost my key, I ordered a new set from mcgard.com. I sent them photos, and they matched it. This was 6 years ago, but they’re still around.

You can buy a nut cracker to remove the locked lug nut. Then just get a new set. They usually cost $20-$40.

Hammer a 19mm 12-point socket onto it and torque it off. Easy!

This is how you do it.

Just go to a Toyota dealer. They’ll have the full set and can figure out which key you need. They can sell you the right one if you still want to use it.
