Toyota’s OW-16 full synthetic can last 7,500-10,000 miles or up to a year.
I just go by miles. If my car sits for months, I don’t change the oil unless I’ve driven enough.
I don’t drive much. My last two oil changes were over a year apart. No problems so far.
Some experts say the 5,000-mile rule is just marketing. They suggest waiting longer if you’re using synthetic oil.
Toyota’s guide actually recommends 10,000 miles for oil changes unless you drive in extreme conditions. Dealerships push for 5,000 miles because they want your business.

Dealerships only cover two free oil changes (at 10k and 20k miles). The 5k and 15k services are just inspections and tire rotations.
@Martina
My last two Tundras got free oil changes every 5,000 miles until the 24-month free service period was up. I was surprised, but I wasn’t going to turn it down.
I only drive about 1,000 miles a year. I still get maintenance done once a year just to be safe.
I do it every 5,000 miles since it’s covered by my dealership.

What exactly is covered?
I aim for every 6 months or 5,000 miles, but sometimes I go longer. That’s why I use full synthetic—it buys me extra time if I’m late.
