It’s rare, but it still happens more than people think.
@TacomaTribe2
What about when driving? The airflow could act like blowing on hot coals and cause the fire to spread.
@TacomaTribe2
Even though your general point is right, a red hot manifold (900°F) is more than enough to ignite motor oil, which combusts around 500°F.
@TacomaTribe2
That’s not true. Isuzu had to recall the Trooper for fires caused by oil leaks onto the exhaust.

Oil leaks can definitely cause fires. It happens more often than you’d think.
I worry about this with my '12 Forester. The main seal leaks oil onto the heat shield, and you can smell it cooking when driving at highway speeds.
@TacomaTribe2
My 2023 didn’t show any warning signs either. Subaru should look into this.
@TacomaTribe2
Oil does burn easily enough when it’s hot.

Make that $100 because you’ll want a good mount for it. The extinguisher flying around in a crash would be dangerous.
@Quinlan
Get a HalGuard fire extinguisher. A regular ABC extinguisher leaves a mess all over your engine bay.

Isn’t that what car insurance is for? Let it burn. What’s the plan now? A 2025?

I’d be standing there recording, texting my insurance, and calling Subaru USA.
@Dallas
I picture a guy in a clown suit on the phone with State Farm while balloons pop in the back. The Wilderness model isn’t fireproof, people.

My car burned down, so I got a 2025 Outback. My insurance is through the roof now.

What about the brush and vegetation near the car? It could catch fire and spread.
@Hazel
Why so negative? We could have had a community marshmallow roast instead.
@Hazel
Yeah, because I’d be so worried about everything else while my car is burning. Come on.

That’s the point of having a fire extinguisher—to stop it from getting worse.

I thought about getting one, but I live in Nevada where it’s over 115°F. Would it be safe to keep it in the car?
