I’m gonna be replacing the fuel tank on my 2005 Toyota Rav4 soon, and I figured I’d replace the parking brake too. I’ve seen in schematics that there are three parts to it. Anyone have any tips or instructions on how to do this? Also, is it easier to do with disc brakes in the back? Any help is appreciated!
I did this on my Rav4 last year. Are you talking about replacing the brake cable, the shoes, or both?

Both, actually. I’ll be doing the cable and the shoes.

If you’re doing both, just a heads-up that putting the horseshoe and tension spring back on can be tricky. There’s a special tool for the spring, but needle nose pliers can work too.
Is yours the version with disc brakes and a drum e-brake? Some models have both setups.

Yeah, it’s got disc brakes in the back with a drum e-brake. It’s the Sport L model.

Then it should be pretty straightforward. I found a step-by-step video really helpful when I did mine. Here’s one I watched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfvHUhpkj4s. It covers removing the pads and rotors, then shows how to access the e-brake shoes.
Is there anything about this in the owner’s manual? I always check there first.

Nah, the owner’s manual doesn’t cover stuff like this. You’d need a repair guide or online videos for step-by-step instructions.
FYI, it might be worth getting a spring tool if you’re replacing the tension spring. Makes things a lot easier.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll look into that. Didn’t know there was a special tool for it.
Lol, I replaced mine last year and totally forgot to buy new springs. Ended up using the old ones. Worked fine, but new springs would’ve been better.

Haha, classic. At least it worked out. Sometimes you just gotta improvise.
