I saw a post saying you should stop fueling when the pump clicks off the first time and never add more.
I drive a 2025 Camry SE and never top off, but I usually add a little extra after the first click because it feels like the pump stops early. I’ve noticed I can put in another half to a full gallon before it clicks again. Could this damage any sensors or the ORVR system? I mostly fill up at Costco, so I’m not sure if their pump nozzles make a difference.
You should stop at the first click. Adding more fuel can mess up the evaporative emissions system. The charcoal canister is designed to handle vapor, not liquid fuel. If gas gets into it, it can cause problems.
Also, even when your fuel gauge shows empty, you still have a small reserve. You’ll usually fill up about 10-11 gallons, and the fuel pump stays cool by being submerged in fuel. Try not to let it get too low too often.
Yeah, I used to round up after filling, just like my dad always did. After years of doing that, it damaged the vents in the tank and triggered a check engine light. Had to take it to the dealer to fix.
If too much fuel gets in, it can flood the charcoal canister and cause expensive issues. I once worked on an Avalon that kept stalling because every time it purged, it sent too much fuel into the system and messed up the air-fuel ratio. So yeah, overfilling can definitely cause problems.
I don’t think the click is always accurate. On my 2012, the gas light comes on when I have 2.76 gallons left, so I stop to fill up then. If my tank holds 17 gallons, I should be able to add about 14.24, but sometimes the pump clicks off at 13.5 depending on how far the nozzle is inserted.
