Saw a 3.0R Outback from around 2007 for 2k and ngl it’s kinda tempting. Flat-six, AWD, big boot, and it doesn’t look like a total mess. It’s got 245hp and those comfy leather seats. But I read they can be money pits with stuff like rust and big tax bills. Just wondering if anyone here owns one or has owned one and what I should watch out for?
Flat-six for 2 grand sounds crazy but make sure you check under the car. These things rust in weird spots like around the sunroof and rear arches.

Yup, had mine fail MOT with ‘corrosion to vehicle’ and nothing specific. They just rot slowly and sneak up on you lol.
Real talk, the tax on these is brutal. I used to pay £340, now it’s £710 just cause it’s a few grams over. That stings every year.

Wait what… why did it jump so much?

It’s based on CO2. This one is 231g/km and just misses the lower band. Newer ones sneak under but not this beast lol.
They’re great if you keep up with maintenance. The engine is solid but things like timing chain tensioners and oil cooler gaskets can go. Also fuel pump or throttle sensor might give you a hard time.

Do head gaskets blow like on the 2.5s?
@Hale
Not really. The 3.0 is actually pretty good for that. It’s mostly other small stuff that adds up if you ignore it.
The fuel costs will hit you though. Officially 28mpg but in real life mine did like 19 or 20. Not great if you’re driving a lot.

I saw one go from full to empty in like 4 days… daily commuting ain’t it for these.
If it’s got ivory leather, get ready for every bit of dirt to show up. Kinda wild they used that in a car meant for muddy boots.

Lol yeah mine looked gross within a week. Should’ve come with wet wipes in the glove box.
Mine had a weird thing where the ABS and stability lights came on. Failed MOT for that, passed again 2 weeks later with no fix. Still don’t get what happened.

That’s weird. Maybe the lights just reset themselves? Did it come back again later?
@Sunny
Nah, stayed off. Maybe it was just having a moment lol.
