I’m looking to buy my first car and found a 2008 Forester at a dealership. It has 148,947 miles and they’re asking $5,943. I like that it has a lot of space and AWD, but I don’t know much about Subaru. Is 148k miles too much for that price? What do you all think? I’m in Pennsylvania.
Did you check for rust? How’s the head gasket and power steering rack? I personally wouldn’t pay over $5k after taxes and fees, but I’m not super familiar with car prices in your area.
At 150k miles, a Subaru has usually used up most of its good years.
I have two of these, and they’re great cars. The issue is they usually need major maintenance around 100-120k miles. Spark plugs, all fluids changed, timing belt, pulleys, water pump, head gaskets, and wheel bearings. If that work has been done, it’ll probably go another 100k before needing it again.
If you can do the work yourself, it’s manageable. If you have to pay a shop, expect to spend around $4-6k. Also, in PA, rust is a big deal. Check the underside and rear wheel arches carefully, because rust can make future repairs a nightmare.
If the head gaskets haven’t been replaced, I’d stay away.

Are head gaskets a big issue with these?
