Looking at a 2020 Forester Touring with about 35k miles for $26,500 out the door. Does that sound reasonable? Any common problems with this year? I’d love to hear from people who have owned one for a while. Thanks!
For that price, I’d probably just get a new one instead.

I was looking at the Touring trim, and new ones are going for over $42k.
I had a 2019, and it gave me a lot of issues. The battery was too small, the cam carrier leaked, the TCV failed, and the dealer told me my transmission was making noise and needed more checks. All of this happened before 90k miles. I still liked the car, but it had more problems than my last three Subarus combined. I’d think about a 2025 instead if you’re already spending that much.
@Zayn
The MSRP for a 2025 Touring is $42,600.
I have a 2020 Limited with 70k miles. I’ve kept up with maintenance and haven’t had any major problems. I take it to ski resorts and go camping with it pretty often.

Did you buy it new?
@Maverick
Yeah, bought it new.
I just bought a 2020 Forester Limited for $24,500 with 41k miles. Up to you, but I don’t think the Touring trim is worth paying $2,000 more.

Was that your final price, or were there extra fees?
@Maverick
That was before taxes and dealer fees.
I bought a 2020 Limited new and haven’t had any issues so far with similar mileage. The main thing to watch for in the 2020 models is the Thermo Control Valve (TCV). Subaru switched to a cheaper plastic design for 2019-2021, and a lot of them failed. Subaru extended the warranty, so if it hasn’t already been replaced, it might be something to check.
I have a 2020 Forester Touring with about 55k miles. At 45k, the transmission failed, but it was covered under warranty. Other than that, it’s been fine. The dealership handled the repair pretty smoothly.
@Hart
The transmission went out at 45k miles? That doesn’t sound good for long-term reliability.
I paid $33k for my 2020 Touring new. It just hit 70k miles, and I haven’t had any real issues. I stay on top of maintenance—oil, plugs, diffs, rotations—and I check the coolant regularly. I know the TCV might go out eventually, but it’s covered until 150k miles.
That price didn’t include taxes and dealer fees.
