I picked up this Tundra recently, and I’ve gotta say, it’s been great. I’m curious to hear what everyone thinks. Here’s a picture of it:
Nice looking truck! I’ve been thinking about making the switch too. I’ve got a 2013 F150 with the 3.5 EcoBoost. It’s been a solid truck, but last month a connecting rod went through the block out of nowhere.
@GaryRoberts
I made the switch about five years ago. My ‘13 EcoBoost started making chain rattle noises, and I didn’t want to risk the cam phaser repair bill. No regrets since I got my Gen 2.5 Tundra. I do miss the boost sometimes, but it’s not a big deal.
@GaryRoberts
Thanks! The 3.5 EcoBoost is great… until it’s not. When they fail, it’s not pretty. The 2013–2021 Tundras are known for their reliability, and you can really feel the quality. It’s not as quick as an F150, but the torque and solid build make up for it.
@Tracy
I’m leaning more toward reliability over performance these days. From what I’ve read, the Gen 2 and 2.5 Tundras are super dependable. There’s a 2011 Limited with 87k miles for $20k at a dealership near me. It’s tempting, especially since fixing my F150 would cost about $14k.
@GaryRoberts
You really can’t go wrong with the Gen 2s. The 2.5 models have some nice upgrades while keeping the same reliability. If you can, try to find a 2020 or 2021—they’re a great balance of new features and durability.
@Tracy
Finding a 2.5 double cab in my price range is tough, especially here in California. I just have to be patient.
@Tracy
Toyota has a different approach to trucks compared to the big three. They focus more on low-end torque, which doesn’t feel as exciting as horsepower, but it’s what you need in a truck. Less stress on the engine means it lasts longer. That’s one reason their trucks have such great reputations.
Great choice The Gen 2.5 Tundras are still the best-looking trucks Toyota has made.

Totally agree. They nailed the design.
I’ve got a Gen 2 and I love it, but the 2.5s definitely look better inside and out. I kinda wish I had waited, but I bought my 2012 new right before I retired. It’s only got 45k miles, so I’ll probably stick with it for the long haul. You’re gonna love yours!
Tundra beats everything.
I’ve got a new F150, and I love it, but the second-gen Tundra was a close second for me. Looks great—enjoy!
Welcome to the club, my friend.
