A colleague is selling a 2005 Toyota Matrix with 150k miles for $3000. It’s a manual with some cosmetic wear, and the brakes were replaced last year. Smog tests are clear. Do you think it’s a good deal for commuting in the city and some highway driving?
I’d definitely consider it, as long as they’ve kept up with maintenance.

They mentioned they have. What should I specifically check when I test drive it?

Since it has a timing chain, that’s one less thing to worry about. Check the oil for any signs of a milkshake, which indicates antifreeze in the oil. Look at the transmission fluid, inspect for rust underneath, and watch for any smoke or steam from the exhaust.
@Bay
Got it, but what exactly do you mean by ‘milkshake’ when checking the oil?

Good question! A ‘milkshake’ appearance means the head gasket is leaking, mixing antifreeze with the oil. It looks like chocolate milk.
@Bay
Will this be visible after the car’s been driven, or can I see it when it’s stationary?

You can usually see it when stationary, but it might be more apparent after a drive.

Good luck! We had an '05 Corolla that lasted over 10 years and more than 200k miles.
@Bay
Thanks! I’m excited to give it a try.
Which engine does it have? If it’s the 1ZZ, it’s probably a great deal. It’s basically a Corolla and should last a long time.

It does have a ZZ engine, but I’m not sure which one exactly.
@Dezi
If you like manual cars, that’s a steal. It’s rare to see Toyotas with under 180k miles for less than $5,000 these days.

I learned to drive on a manual, so I’m comfortable with stick shifts.
@Dezi
In that case, go for it if it’s in good condition.
Go for it! I have a 2004 XRS, and it’s been fantastic. It’s fun to drive, fuel-efficient, and reliable. I bought mine for $4k with 140k miles, and now it has 162k with no major issues.
