Toyota has reduced the price of its hydrogen car to just over $15,000 in California. They’re also offering $15,000 worth of free hydrogen fuel. What are your thoughts on this deal? Is it practical given the limited hydrogen refueling stations?
I’d love to get one, but I’m in the Netherlands, so it’s not possible.
Can you legally buy one in California and register it in another state?

You could, but refueling would be the issue since most stations are in California and a single one in Hawaii. I’ve seen Mirais listed on Carvana from other states, though.
@Maverick
I’ve heard there are a couple of stations in Colorado, and there might be one opening in my city soon. I’ll have to check it out.

I think there were plans for hydrogen stations in the Northeast, like NH, ME, and MA, but nothing seems to have come of it. I like the Mirai’s design, but EVs have the advantage of home charging.
@Toyoyo
There were talks about hydrogen pumps in NH a while ago. My workplace was supposed to get two stations funded by the VW diesel settlement, but nothing ever came of it.
@Maverick
I’ve heard some bases on the East Coast have hydrogen stations, but they’re not publicly accessible.
@Maverick
Hawaii does have a hydrogen station on Oahu. I’ve seen a few hydrogen Toyotas around here, but I think they’re only available for lease.

I didn’t realize the Hawaii stations were public. That’s good to know!
@Maverick
You could try Nikola in Phoenix, but outside of that, there’s not much for public use yet.
@Maverick
You could always install a home electrolysis unit.

I’m not sure I’d feel comfortable with a setup like that in my garage.
The nearest hydrogen station to me is 12 miles away.

Mine is over 1,400 miles away.

Twelve miles? That’s not too bad.

Is that a good or bad distance? It seems decent for an emerging fuel option.

Hydrogen is more like energy storage than fuel. Producing and storing it takes a lot of energy.
@Davido
By that logic, fossil fuels are just nature-made batteries. The efficiency of gas comes from oil being naturally produced.

Hydrogen is converted into electricity to power an electric motor. The big difference is the way energy is stored.
