So I just saw that Toyota had to stop making the RAV4 in Japan because of some explosion at a parts supplier. Looks like production was paused on a few lines, and now they’re just starting back up. One person died and two others got hurt, which is awful.
They said they aren’t sure yet if this will slow down RAV4s coming to the US, but considering 21% of them were imported last year, I feel like this could mess with supply. Anyone else following this? Think this will make prices go up?

Wait, so they completely stopped making RAV4s? Or was it just a few plants?
Not all of them, just some lines in two plants. Plus one at Daihatsu’s Kyoto factory. They paused production until March 11 and are just starting back up now.

Anyone know how bad the explosion was? Sounds serious if it shut down production.
Yeah, it was bad. One person died and two others were injured. Happened at a parts supplier on March 6. Toyota paused some production lines right after.

Is this gonna delay RAV4s coming to the US?
Toyota says it’s too early to know, but 21% of RAV4s sold in the US last year came from Japan. If this slowed down production, it might affect imports.

So if I was planning to buy a RAV4 soon, should I expect higher prices?
Depends on how long it takes for them to catch up. Toyota says they’ll try to make up for lost production, but if supply is lower for a while, prices could go up.
