I’ve had both. Love the 5.7 for the power and sound, but the 4.7 wins for smoothness and reliability. My 100 Series Land Cruiser with a 4.7 is still my favorite vehicle, and I’ve had some cool stuff.
You’re asking two different things.
I don’t think either is the most legendary Toyota V8. That title belongs to the 1UZ 4.0L. Super smooth, insanely reliable, and tons of million-mile examples. One of the best engines ever made.
The 5.7 has way more power, no question, but the 4.7 is bulletproof if you keep it stock and take care of it.
I’ve got two 4.7 trucks, both over 300k miles. Only repairs beyond basic maintenance were ignition coils.
4.7L V8 for sure… and I own a 5.7 lol.
It’s got a cast iron block, and Toyota built it during their ‘overengineering’ era in the late 80s and 90s when they made everything extra durable.
Two 4.7s have hit a million miles. That says it all. I had a 2007 4.7, traded it at 230k miles for $10k. Now driving a 2016 with a 5.7 (150k miles) and loving it.
Owned both. Took my 4.7 to 286k before selling it. That thing was bulletproof. Had a head gasket that lasted way beyond its time and only leaked a little. My 5.7 (77k miles) has been solid so far, but I’ve been dealing with a dirty MAF—probably from the cold air intake. Love the extra power of the 5.7 though. Both are great engines.
Both can last a million miles.
Just depends on if you want more towing power or not.
